I believe we can heal in depression – at least, based on my experience with major depressive disorder.
But what do I mean by healing in depression? Does it mean eliminating it altogether and no longer having to live with its debilitating symptoms?
No, this is not what I mean.
Depression is a very complicated disorder and to suggest a magical approach to “solve it” would undermine its complexity and discount its inherent dangers. Empty a bucket of marbles on a concrete floor and try to contain them – about the best way I can describe trying to control symptoms.
I believe that healing in depression means recognizing you don’t try to control it, but rather, you focus on controlling you – by being proactive and responsible in your response to symptoms. Its ensuring you do what it takes to keep yourself safe – so you avoid tripping up on a bunch of marbles!
